Navigational Guide

to the Breede River Estuary

Dangerous Hazards, Exposed Sandbanks and Our Recommendations

DISCLAIMER: BREEDE RIVER ESTUARY NAVIGATIONAL GUIDE

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE — READ BEFORE NAVIGATING

The Lower Breede River Conservancy Trust (LBRCT) has developed and produced a navigational guide map in the interests of promoting safe boating and fishing on the Breede River Estuary. The map is intended to assist river users by highlighting known or reported navigational hazards, shallow-water areas and sandbanks that may become exposed at low tide.

This map is provided for general informational purposes only. It is not a guarantee of navigational safety and is to be used entirely at the user’s own risk. Furthermore, it is not exhaustive, may not reflect current river conditions, and must not be relied upon as a substitute for proper navigation, official navigational information, local knowledge or sound judgement.

ALL BOATING AND WATERCRAFT ACTIVITIES ON THE BREEDE RIVER ESTUARY ARE UNDERTAKEN ENTIRELY AT THE OPERATOR’S OWN RISK.

Water levels, tides, currents, sediment movement and other environmental conditions can change rapidly, creating hazards that may be unmarked, newly formed or not depicted on the map.

The LBRCT is a local conservancy and is not mandated or responsible for the identification, marking, maintenance, management or removal of any navigational hazards within the estuary. The development and distribution of this map do not constitute an assumption of responsibility for navigational safety, nor do they imply that all hazards have been identified, surveyed or recorded.

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, the LBRCT accepts no responsibility or liability for any loss, damage, injury or death arising from or in connection with the use of this map or any boating, fishing or other recreational activity on the river, including incidents involving grounding, collision, submerged obstructions, shallow water or exposed sandbanks.

Yellow / White drums have been used to mark certain fixed hazards, while many floating logs have been removed. Importantly, changes to the main channels and sandbanks have also been prioritised. However, given the dynamic nature of an intertidal estuary, these areas are forever changing. Therefore, it is imperative that the information provided below is seen and accepted as a working document / draft. Stakeholder feedback is essential, as we have the ability to revise and update the map as needed and in real time.

You will note from the video that in several areas of the upper estuary safe boating is severely hindered by shallow areas and sandbanks that may be exposed at low tide. It is our recommendation that all towed water sports are performed in areas where no sand banks are present, and where there is an established deep channel. Furthermore, in the lower estuary it becomes important to understand that the majority of hazards are indicative of shallow water and appropriate care should taken be when traversing these areas.

Snake and Animal Rescues since July:

2 Puff Adders

4 Slug Eaters

1 Cape Cobra

1 Brown House Snake

1 Whale Calf Stranding

1 Risso's Dolphin Stranding

The stranding of a Risso’s dolphin (Grampus riseus) at Witsand is noteworthy because this species is more commonly associated with deeper offshore waters than with shallow coastal environments and estuaries. Risso’s dolphins are typically found over the continental shelf and slope, often in areas where squid — their primary prey — is abundant. This makes the find valuable for local marine mammal monitoring, as strandings provide important opportunities to collect biological samples, assess the animal’s life history and overall health and investigate the potential causes of it's death.

Snake Season is here!

Be aware that as temperatures rise snakes become more active. Get to know your snakes of the Breede River Estuary by downloading this pamphlet and save it to your device. Interested in reading more about snakes and what to do in event of a bite? Read our blog page here.

Following Pearl's Journey: The Latest on Our Loggerhead Turtle

"Big mamma" Pearl, the adult female loggerhead turtle rescued in Witsand by our team in March, continues her tough rehabilitation journey at the Two Oceans Aquarium.

She is still considered a critical care patient and has had a feeding tube in place since late April as a severe bone infection in her jaw prevents her from eating independently. The feeding tube provides Pearl with good nutrition while her antibiotics fight the infection.

The turtle team offers Pearl small pieces of sustainably sourced prawns, hake, and squid every day, and cheers her on whenever she manages to eat a few pieces. Recently, she's been eating more and more solid foods on her own! Her favourites appear to be de-shelled prawns.

Pearl's future is still uncertain, but moments like these remind us of turtles' resilience.

Recycle Month

with Vondeling and Kluitjieskraal Primary Schools

For the Recycle Month of September, the LBRCT participated in the International Coastal Clean-up initiative alongside learners from Vondeling Primary School. The activity provided an opportunity to engage local learners in the impacts of litter and plastic pollution along the coastline. Thirteen bags of litter were collected, totalling 51 kilograms. After the clean-up the LBRCT braaied boerewors rolls and handed out cool drinks to all 100 participants.

A few days later, we undertook another beach clean-up with Kluitjieskraal Primary School as part of our ongoing commitment to reducing pollution during Recycle Month. We also organised sponsored roosterkoeks for more than 30 children.

Together, we’re inspiring the next generation to care for our environment and protect our natural heritage. Should you wish to support future school visits, we would be most grateful. The LBRCT is a registered NGO and PBO and can issue tax certificates for donations.
