General Information

The Municipal by-laws regulating the use of the Breede River and Estuary require all power boats to be registered and licensed. Failure to do so renders operators liable to a fine under these by-laws.


Accepted Boat Licence payment methods include EFT and SnapScan. Annual licences are available here. Annual licence fees are determined by the horsepower of the engine(s). Depending on your engine size and duration of stay, an annual licence may work out cheaper.

Day permit: A flat rate of R165 per day irrespective of the size of engine(s).

Licences can be collected at our office in Witsand or at Living the Breede in Diepkloof, Malgas.

    I, the undersigned, declare that I am aware of the Rules and Regulations pertaining to the use of the Breede River, in possession of valid certificates of fitness and skippers qualification, and understand the legal obligations placed on me when using the Breede River. I further acknowledge that the marker buoys placed in the Breede River are for guidance purposes only. I hereby indemnify Swellendam Municipality, Hessequa Municipality, Lower Breede River Conservancy Trust, their management, employees, and agents in respect of any damage of whatsoever nature, however arising or sustained as a result of me operating my boat on the Breede River.

    Day Permits are now available at the public launch sites in Witsand and Infanta. Sign boards have been installed at Government Slipway, Kraaltjie and Moddergat which inform boat operators of the requirement to be in possession of a valid Municipal Boat Licence as well as offer day permits payments via SnapScan.

    Day permit fee: A flat rate of R 165 per day irrespective of the size of engine(s).


    How to BUY a day permit using SnapScan:

    1. Download the SnapScan app on your smartphone.
    2. Sign up and link to your credit or debit card.
    3. Scan the QR code alongside or on the sign board at the slipway.
    4. Payment calculation: Number of days x rate per day.
    5. Please use your name, surname & cell number as a reference.
